Four Democrat Senators are now urging the Biden Administration and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to reevaluate their decision to end Trump-era policy, Title 42.
Both Arizona Democrat Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly, along with Democrat Sens. John Tester of Montana and Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, are suggesting that the Biden Administration is not prepared for the historical surge of illegal immigrants that are expected at the border after the end of Title 42.
A federal judge issued a shocking ruling on November 15th asking the Biden Administration to end the Trump-era policy that has effectively stopped more than two million illegal migrants from crossing the border.
Ever since Biden took office, American borders have seen a record number of illegal migrants entering the country. According to numbers from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), more than 2.3 million illegal migrants crossed the U.S. southern border in the fiscal year 2022 alone. And more than 230,000 illegal migrants further crossed the border in October. Experts predict this number could be well in the range of five million as many migrants weren’t apprehended by officials.
“Since the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued the Public Health Determination and terminated the Title 42 Order on April 1April 1, 2022, we have expressed concern with DHS’ preparations for the end of Title 42, especially as the situation has deteriorated at times,” the senators wrote to the DHS Secretary in a letter.
“Record annual encounters have led to untenable situations. In Arizona, shelters have been forced well beyond capacity. This month, El Paso has seen over 700 migrants released directly onto city streets due to overcrowding. This is not safe, and creates a dangerous situation for migrants and communities,” the Senators added in their letter.
This is not the first time that the administration has attempted to end the effective Trump-era policy. Back in April, the CDC was considering ending Title 42 on May 23 May. Many Democrat senators raised similar concerns back then, and a federal judge struck down the administration’s decision after multiple Republican states sued the administration.
