Ed Buck, a high profile multi-million dollar Democratic donor, was sentenced to 30 years in a federal prison after being convicted of distributing illegal drugs that led to the deaths of at least two people.
Both of the two confirmed deaths were black men. Additional charges stated that Buck supplied and personally injected gay men with methamphetamine in exchange for sex.
Buck is a notorious megadonor within Democratic party circles as he has donated over half a million dollars to 40 different office holders in California.
Buck’s contributions are largely made to California politicians however he has additionally had a role in larger races. He made substantial contributions to Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton’s respective Presidential campaigns as well as Gavin Newsom’s gubernatorial campaign.
67-year-old Buck was found guilty last July on all nine counts charged by a federal jury. The charges included distribution of methamphetamine as well as trafficking men to travel with him in exchange for sexual intercourse.
Chelsea Norell, an assistant US Attorney disclosed details of Buck’s case in a court filing:
“Buck used his money and privilege to exploit the wealth and power imbalances between himself and his victims, who were unhoused, destitute, and/or struggling with addiction, he spent thousands of dollars on drugs and party and play sessions that destroyed lives and bred insidious addictions.”
The two confirmed deaths from Buck’s drug distribution were Gemmel Moore and Timothy Dean. Both men died while at Buck’s apartment or house.
Moore, 26, fatally overdosed from methamphetamine in a West Hollywood apartment owned by Buck in July 2017. Dean, 55, died a few years later in 2019 at Buck’s home. Both men were black.
The Daily Wire released a piece on the arresting, noting:
“Buck had been exchanging drugs for sexual favors, which led to the overdose deaths of two black men in his West Hollywood, California, apartment. NBC News reported that prosecutors sought a life sentence for Buck, noting that he preyed on the vulnerable to fulfill his sexual fetish.”
Nicknamed “Doctor Kevorkian,” Buck had at least ten different victims and would occasionally drug them while they were unconscious. One of the victims stated that he was “unable to move” after being injected with a tranquilizer. Later in the evening when Buck wanted the victim to leave his property, Buck “became frustrated and obtained a power saw from a closet, turned it on, and approached [the] victim with it.
