On Friday, Twitter’s new owner Elon Musk combated a potential “cancel” of his app, explaining the possibility of him building a new phone to compete with Apple if Twitter is taken off the Apple App Store and Google Play.
Conservative political commentator Liz Wheeler did not plan to get the attention of the world’s richest man when she tweeted her idea for Musk. Wheeler floated this concept of a new Elon phone to her 800k followers saying:
“If Apple & Google boot Twitter from their app stores, @elonmusk should produce his own smartphone. Half the country would happily ditch the biased, snooping iPhone & Android. The man builds rockets to Mars, a silly little smartphone should be easy, right?”
After this tweet went viral with over 150k likes, the Tesla billionaire gave a definitive response to the hypothetical:
“I certainly hope it does not come to that, but, yes, if there is no other choice, I will make an alternative phone,” Musk responded to Wheeler’s tweet.

This idea seemingly came from an op-ed in the New York Times from Yoel Roth, former head of trust and safety at Twitter. Roth expressed his worries about Twitter’s potential expulsion from the platform.
“Failure to adhere to Apple’s and Google’s guidelines would be catastrophic, risking Twitter’s expulsion from their app stores and making it more difficult for billions of potential users to get Twitter’s services. This gives Apple and Google enormous power to shape the decisions Twitter makes,” Roth said.
Regardless of Musk’s intentions to bring a new phone to market, the public seems to support this idea, as his loyal fan base committed over 500k likes to the concept. Many supporters in the comments point to their trust in him versus the tech giants.
Musk is restoring the faith many lost to big tech companies. Musk confirmed this week that the social media platform had used biased policies to specifically target and censor conservative viewpoints.
Since Musk’s takeover, prominent accounts like that of Dr. Jordan B Peterson, The Babylon Bee, Project Veritas, Alex Lorusso, Former President Donald Trump, and many others that were previously banned by Twitter’s old leadership were recently restored.
