On Wednesday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. was named in a complaint that will be investigated in front of the House Ethics Committee, according to a press release by the committee.

The statement was short and uninformative, not explaining what the complaint entails, only that AOC was reported of a violation in June of this year and that this report does not inherently determine guilt.

The letter read as such.

“Pursuant to House Rule XI, clause 3(b)(8)(A), and Committee Rules 17A(b)(1)(A), 17A(c)(1), and 17A(j), the Acting Chairwoman and Acting Ranking Member of the Committee on Ethics have jointly decided to extend the matter regarding Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, which was transmitted to the Committee by the Office of Congressional Ethics on June 23, 2022.

“The Committee notes that the mere fact of a referral or an extension, and the mandatory disclosure of such an extension and the name of the subject of the matter, does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred, or reflect any judgment on behalf of the Committee.

“The Committee will announce its course of action in this matter following its organizational meeting and adoption of Committee Rules in the 118th Congress.”

AOC’s camp responded in a statement saying, “The Congresswoman has always taken ethics incredibly seriously, refusing any donations from lobbyists, corporations, or other special interests,” a spokesperson said. “We are confident that this matter will be dismissed.”

It has been reported that the extension described in the statement was likely the result of the investigation occurring close to an election. The committee reserves the right to delay matters like that if they are within certain time constraints of an election.

The New York Post has two theories of violations around the time of the reported incident. First of which deals with when AOC infamously dawned a “Tax the Rich” dress at the 2021 Met Gala. The complaint is that the New York Rep may have gotten access to the event for free.

The other complaint constituted that a designer made the dress especially for her, which she can not accept in her place in Congress without going through the proper payment and channels.
