On Sunday, the Republican nominee for Governor of Arizona, Kari Lake, was asked about a potential threat from the NFL to stop her political plans. She responded saying “I don’t answer to the NFL, I answer to the people of Arizona.”
During an interview Lake voiced her plans to attack the flood of fentanyl entering her state from the southern border. She outlined her plan to issue a “Declaration of Invasion” against Mexico and the threat emanating from immigrants and drugs crossing the border.
The interviewer brought attention to the fallout, specifically juxtaposing her plans with the boycotts of the Martin Luther King law in 1993, when the NFL pulled the Super Bowl from the state over the controversy and the possibility of the same thing happening to her if she’s elected.
Lake responded to this saying, “You want to tell me, that a bunch of football teams, owned by billionaires, are okay with fentanyl pouring across our border at a record level, killing young people? The No. 1 killer is fentanyl. 18-45. It’s killing a generation of people. If the NFL is okay with that, then they need to do some soul-searching. I don’t think the NFL is that stupid, I really don’t.
“But, I’m not going to be taking marching orders from the NFL. I’m going to be taking marching orders from the people of Arizona.”
Lake continues to make headlines as her questioning of the legitimacy of the 2020 election continues to be the focus of media outlets. Notoriously The New York Times called her ‘“Donald Trump in lipstick”.
The gubernatorial candidate was recently asked whether she was confident that this midterm election in Arizona would be fair, Lake responded, “We’re seeing problem after problem…I wish I could sit here and say I have complete faith in the system. I don’t have faith in the system.”
Lake currently leads by one point in the latest FiveThirtyEight polls over Democrat Katie Hobbs. Although Hobbs led polls just two weeks ago, her recent absence from the public and at debates has caused her fall in the public favor.
The New York Times wrote an article titled “Where’s Katie” as they explain Lake is taking full advantage of this opportunity in the limelight.
