On Friday, President Biden met with Cherelle Griner, the wife of WNBA star Brittney Griner, at the White House. Cherelle announced letters from Brittany have taken a dark turn. “She’s not well, she’s losing it.”
Former WNBA player Brittney Griner is serving a nine-year prison sentence in Russia for marijuana and as time passes hope surrounding the US efforts to win her release falter.
Cherelle Griner spoke with CNN anchor Abby D. Phillip and gave her response to the meeting she had that day with President Biden. Cherelle detailed Biden’s emphasis on his efforts to attempt to bring Brittany home, which she said “It allowed me to have confidence in what he’s doing right now.”
The most terrifying part of her statement through Abby Philip is when she detailed Brittney’s mental state, “Cherelle has been exchanging letters from BG during her imprisonment in Russia. But recently those letters have taken a dark turn. ‘She’s not well,’ Cherelle told me. ‘She’s losing it.’”
Cherelle Griner told me she had a good meeting with Biden. He gave her more confidence in the admin’s efforts to bring Brittney Griner home. “It allowed me to have confidence in what he’s doing right now."

As the media swarm surrounding Brittany has diminished, fears of negotiations failed have continued and Cherelle echoed those same fears “I don’t think they have quite figured out exactly what Russia wants in return for BG.”
Cherelle also released her own statement following the Biden meeting.
“I want to thank President Biden for today’s meeting. It was an honor to speak with him directly about the Brittney we know and love, and to thank him for the Administration’s efforts to secure her release.”
“I’ve felt every minute of the grueling seven months without her, I look forward to the day my wife is back home. As my family and I continue on this journey, I’d like to thank the broad coalition of friends, leaders, and supporters who continue to stand with us and advocate for Brittney’s swift and safe return. Let’s share a unified commitment to bringing all Americans home to their families and loved ones. Together We Are BG.”
I had a chance to meet with Elizabeth Whelan and Cherelle Griner to keep them apprised of where we are in negotiations with Russia. My Administration will continue to work tirelessly and pursue every possible avenue to bring Paul and Brittney home as soon as possible. pic.twitter.com/B7dGiaDF7U

The President and White House Press Secretary released a statement about their meeting with the Whelan and Griner families.
“The President held the meetings to reiterate his continued commitment to working through all available avenues to bring Brittney and Paul home safely.
Today’s meetings come after earlier meetings and conversations that the President, his national security team, and the State Department have held with the Whelan and Griner families to keep them updated on efforts to secure the release of their loved ones as quickly as possible.”
