Hurricane Ian’s recent sweep through the sunshine state has left Floridians in disarray with many losing their homes and businesses, seeing the things they valued most disappear.
While some people were lucky enough to escape the rains and winds of Hurricane Ian, they now face a new test as looters ravage empty homes and local businesses.
While speaking with Fox News, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd issued a stark warning to his citizens, suggesting with regards to private property, that looters taking advantage of the destruction of Florida should be met with resistance.
Polk County Sheriff:
"I would highly suggest that if a looter breaks into your home … to steal stuff, that you take your gun and you shoot him … so that he looks like grated cheese." pic.twitter.com/mbuzs3gzIq

“These looters…That’s unacceptable. Absolutely unacceptable.
“I would highly suggest that if a looter breaks into your home – comes into your home – while you’re there to steal stuff, that you take your gun and you shoot him. You shoot him so he looks like grated cheese.
“Because, you know what? That’s one looter that won’t break into anyone else’s home.”
The public response to Sheriff Judd’s remarks regarding looters was met with praise and condemnation.
This is not the first time Sheriff Judd has issued remarks with serious implications regarding public chaos.
During the peak of the destructive riots in wake of George Floyd being murdered by a police officer, Judd let it be known that his department would not put up with that chaos in Polk County.
“Let there be no misunderstanding, if you come here to riot, to loot, to injure people, we’re going to lock you up in the county jail. We are going to hunt you down and lock you up if you engage in any criminal conduct.”
The Polk County Sheriff went on to warn anyone considering using the chaos as a cover to loot and ravage his jurisdiction.
“I would tell them, if you value your life, they probably shouldn’t do that in Polk County. Because the people of Polk County like guns, they have guns, I encourage them to own guns, and they’re going to be in their homes tonight with their guns loaded, and if you try to break into their homes to steal, to set fires, I’m highly recommending they blow you back out of the house with their guns. So, leave the community alone.”
The state of Florida has been brutalized by Hurricane Ian and yet people are still being victimized as looters take advantage of their peers’ devastation.
