On Thursday, Whoopi Goldberg was forced into an awkward moment while hosting “The View” and forced to explain a “joke” about Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. Goldberg made a clear homophobic joke and was flustered as she was asked to walk it back after a commercial break.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was the show’s guest for the night. Jean-Pierre brought up Graham and his position for a federal limit on abortions after 15 weeks.
“We have Lindsey Graham, Senator Graham and other and other leaders of the Republican Party who are saying, and they’re being very clear about this, folks, we got to listen to them that they want a national ban on abortions,” the press secretary said.
“Senator Graham said maybe about a month ago, in early August, that he believes, when it comes to marriage, when it comes to abortion, it’s for the states to decide, so, Senator Graham, what changed?” she asked.
This is where Goldberg responded: “Well, maybe he’s getting married? Do it quick, because I know people are fooling around with our marriage rights, wherever you stand,” As to imply the Senator is gay.
The show paused for a commercial, and when it returned Goldberg seemed visibly flustered as she looked at the camera and was forced to explain her joke.
“I need to make clear that I was doing what I do as a comic. Sometimes I make jokes, and it was a joke, nothing more than that,” she said.
“I just got a whole conversation about people misunderstanding the joke. I mean, okay. I should probably never do this show again, if this is what it’s coming to. It was a joke, guys,” Whoopi declared.
A lifelong bachelor with no children, Graham has repeatedly been the subject of mockery on the left as being secretly gay. Figures like Chelsea Handler, Bill Maher, Jon Stewart, Patti LuPone, and others have made crude remarks or implicit references to his orientation over the years.
Just this year, Goldberg was suspended for two weeks as a co-host because she made “wrong and hurtful comments” about Jews and the Holocaust.
Her boss, ABC News President Kim Godwin was forced to apologize to her on Twitter and said “While Whoopi has apologized, I’ve asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments. The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends, family and communities.”
