On Thursday, the wife of WNBA star Brittney Griner said in an interview that Griner is at her “absolute weakest moment in life right now” as she faces a hearing in Russia later this month for her appeal of a nine-year prison sentence for drug possession.

Cherelle Griner, Brittney’s wife sat down for an interview with “CBS Mornings” co-host Gayle King to discuss her wife’s status.

Cherelle explained she has had two phone calls with Brittney in prison, the first being strong and somewhat positive. The second was scary and led her to say, “You could hear that she was not okay. If you think about just a person’s suffering and when they have suffered to a max…she was at the max that day.”

The Moscow region court said it will hear the appeal of her nine-year prison sentence on Oct. 25.

“I feel like at this point it’s going to take Putin to have that same mindset and say ‘You know what, Brittney Griner – who came to my country for seven, eight years, and helped my country be recognized through sport, paid taxes in my country, helped my country – I’m going to sit at a table, and I’m going to be clear about what I need in return for her release,’ so that we can actually get a meeting of the minds between these two governments,” Cherelle told CBS.

Last month President Biden met with Cherelle at the White House. Cherelle announced letters from Brittany have taken a dark turn saying “She’s not well, she’s losing it.”

Cherelle articulated Brittney’s loss of hope to CBS saying, “She said she fears what will happen if Griner’s appeal is denied. ‘Once that hearing is held, and the order is finalized, B.G.’s now in the position where she could be moved to a labor camp.’ My brain can’t even fathom it.”

Cherelle said that her wife is “at her absolute weakest moment in life right now,” and fears that she will be forgotten in Russia.

“She’s, like, saying things to me like, ‘My life just don’t even matter no more,'” Cherelle said. “You know, ‘I feel like my life just doesn’t matter. Like, I’m just being tossed around, like, for people’s enjoyment and gain.'”

Brittany Griner has now spent 231 days in a Russian prison.
