On Monday, another back-and-forth occurred between White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre and Fox News Channel White House Correspondent Peter Doocy after Jean Pierre commented on Twitter’s new status.
Earlier in the Press Conference, Jean-Pierre made a very concerning comment when asked about the White House’s opinion of Twitter’s state and new leadership. When asked if the White House is monitoring the situation Jean-Pierre responded:
“This is something that we’re certainly keeping an eye on. Look, we have always been very clear that when it comes to social media platforms it is their responsibility to make sure that when it comes to misinformation when it comes to the hate that we’re seeing, that they take action, that they continue to take action. Again, we’re all keeping a close eye on this.”
She continued, “We’re all monitoring what’s currently occurring. We see it with our own eyes of what you all are reporting and just for ourselves what is happening on Twitter….we’re going to continue to monitor the situation.”
This caused an uproar on Twitter and throughout conservative circles as many asked what occurrences on the platform warranted concern. This video even required Elon Musk to respond saying “Why are so many in the media against free speech? This is messed up.”
The quick-thinking Fox News Correspondent Doocy was immediately on this misstep from the White House, asking “When are you guys going to delete the White House Twitter account?”
“Why would we do that?” Jean-Pierre responded.
“Well, you’re saying that you’re keeping an eye on Twitter because it might not be a suitable platform, so why use it?” Doocy continued to grill the coordinator.
“Look, I want to be very clear here, the president has always said and he has been very clear in his belief that it is important for social media platforms to continue to take steps to reduce hate speech and misinformation and he will continue to say that. But media platforms make independent choices about their information that they present so look, I don’t have anything to share on any policy or any changes that we will be making. We have multiple platforms, as you know, that we utilize to communicate with the American people,” she responded.

“We are reading what you all are writing and looking at what you are all reporting about misinformation that is out there, but, you know, I would hope that all Americans, including social media companies, civil rights organizations that I just laid out, including Fox as well, would agree that we need to call out hate speech and misinformation,” Pierre continued.
Karine Jean Pierre even returned the next day to double down on the Biden Administrations’ dedication to regulating misinformation and hate speech on social media platforms and their concern for the platform.
